Have You Found Your Hidden Energy System?
What is ‘qi’ and how is it affecting your health?
‘Qi’ refers to ‘life force energy’ and is an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM.)
It refers to a subtle life force energy that runs through the body, governing many mental and physical bodily functions and processes.
Its existence has long been accepted in Eastern medicine.[1]
Though it takes on many names – ‘prana’ in Indian culture, and ‘pneuma’ in Greek culture- the understanding that we are comprised of ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ energy remains the same.
The philosophy that we have a ‘hidden energy system’ has led to the development of energy healing therapies that focus on adjusting and stimulating the body’s natural energy.
Stimulation of energy is believed to restore rebalance and promote natural healing in the body- healing virtually any sickness.
Harvard Medical School now has one of the largest Energy Medicine research programs in the country and most hospitals now offer energy healing therapies, such as reiki and acupuncture, to their patients alongside regular treatment.
The U.S. National Institute of Health stated that ‘the subtle energy in the human energy system can be easily modulated by your own hands.’
And according to Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Biochemist and Nobel Prize Winner, ‘In every culture and every medical tradition before ours, healing was accomplished by moving energy.’
Finally, Western medicine is catching up!
HOW DOES YOUR ENERGY SYSTEM WORK?
Our energy system energetically connects to all other systems in the body, providing us with vital energy.
The connection means all material body components will have a corresponding energetic component.
Unhealthy energy, or energy blockages, can cause our energy balance to tip off scale, leading to sickness and, over time, disease.
Our energy system is medically ‘mapped out’ into chakras, meridians, and acupoints- all with a function.
CHAKRAS
The 7 main Chakras
The 7 main chakras are energy centers that run from the base of our head along the midline of our torso, to our sacrum.
1. Crown- connection
2. Third Eye- imagination, intuition, wisdom
3. Throat- communication, expression
4. Heart- love, peace, joy
5. Solar Plexus- self-worth, self-esteem
6. Sacral- well-being, pleasure, sexuality
7. Root- foundation, grounding, survival
The function of the chakras is to receive and distribute energy to our meridians and corresponding organs.
Chakras must remain open and aligned to promote optimal well-being.
For example, if our root chakra is energetically blocked, we may lose our sense of grounding and foundation, making us feel emotionally unsteady.
MERIDIANS
The Body's Meridians
Our 12 meridians act as powerlines, connecting to organs and exchanging energy with them.
Meridians are, essentially, ‘energy pathways’, meaning that any blockages on the pathway will directly impact the health of the organs and tissues it exchanges energy with.
During energy treatments, the start and endpoint of the meridians are touched to stimulate the entire meridian.
ACUPOINTS
Acupoints in the body
361 acupoints sit along our meridians.
These are little energy centers that allow energy to enter and exit and can be manipulated using touch to rebalance energy flow.
Each acupoint is responsible for a part of your physical, mental, or emotional health.
Therefore, stimulating particular acupoints can help to promote healing in different areas of the body.
