Trending on Twitter recently, NPR wrote an article on How To Take Care Of Yourself And Your Mental Health.

 

It reminded me of how fundamental positive routines are in self-care.

 

We hear the term ‘routine’ often, but what does it mean?

 

A routine is repeated behavior involving momentary time commitment but requiring very little thought.

 

And it is the hidden secret to living your best life.

THE BENEFITS OF A ROUTINE

 

A Harvard study found a common factor between all geniuses and their successes- each followed a daily routine that led them to their outstanding outcomes.

 

Why? Because positive routines keep us on track.

 

The World Health Organization even stated that adherence to a routine is the most important factor in living a healthy life!

 

The problem is, it is also the greatest challenge; only around 50 percent of people achieve it.  

 

Which 50 percent are you? Are you experiencing your best life?

 

If not, a positive, sustainable routine is likely to be missing- so let’s fix it!

 

HOW TO BUILD A POSITIVE ROUTINE

 

STEP 1

 

Learn how your mind works.

 

I finished last in my high school class. Until graduation, I wasn’t even sure if I could graduate.

 

However, it turned out that I just wasn’t sure how to work with my mind.

 

Once I had tuned in to how I work best, I could put a routine in place to help me stay on track.

 

Learn your strengths and weaknesses. It can help you work with, not against, your mind.

 

STEP 2

 

Decide what behavior you would like to change.

 

It could be your eating habits, quitting alcohol, or building a successful career.

 

Be specific.

 

STEP 3

 

Choose your routine

 

It could be taking daily supplements, flossing, meditating, writing, praying, quality time with loved ones, or even the simple act of laughing every day.

 

Building a routine doesn’t have to be complicated, but it should be relevant to achieving the change you desire.

 

 

STEP 4

 

Adhere to your routine

 

Research suggests that successfully breaking habits requires a minimum of 66 days, sometimes up to 99 days.

 

A critical part of routine success is adherence.

 

Reaching 66-99 days means your routine has become a habit; it shouldn’t require thought.

 

STEP 5

 

Analyze the success of your routine.

 

Don’t give up. The right routine will work.

 

If it hasn’t, adapt and try again.

 

It may take time, but future happiness is guaranteed when you find the correct routine.

 

 

BREAKING ROUTINE BARRIERS: HOW TO FIND SUCCESS

 

Overthinking is the equivalent of routine quicksand.

 

Let’s refer back to the start of this article-

 

A routine is repeated behavior involving momentary time commitment but requiring very little thought.

 

Don’t overthink! If it isn’t working, adapt.

 

Dr. William Glasser pioneered a form of counseling called reality therapy; it views behavior as a choice.

 

We can choose to fulfil our needs by changing or ‘reorganizing’ behaviors using action and control.

 

If there is a match between what we perceive as reality and what we desire, we can maintain a behavior.

 

In one particular study, he concluded that coercion and punishment do not work.

 

To find success, we need to self-evaluate, unlearn, and relearn.

 

Another way to build a sustainable routine is to make a deal with yourself.

 

‘If I write one page towards my deadline I’ll go out for a walk.’

 

Sometimes rewards around milestones can help fuel motivation and keep you on track.
